Establishing a Centre for the Orphans in Tanga

Project Basics

Tanzania_171

To provide a loving, nurturing environment for the orphan children to thrive in we aim to build a home for them near Tanga. In Tanga it will be easier to find the carers to look after the children, and the climate will be better for them.

The orphanage will be built in two phases. The first phase will be a dormitory for younger children and a nursery / day-care centre. A suitable plot of land for the first phase has been found in the town of Pongwe near Tanga. After finishing building the orphanage we will take some of the younger rural children to live at the centre, where they will be loved, cared for, given a good education and taught God’s word. We aim to open the day care centre to the children of families who live close to the centre, to breakdown the stigma associated with orphan children.

The second phase of the centre is to build an orphanage for the older children. Again a suitable plot of land has already been identified near Tanga. When the children are old enough they will transfer from the nursery to the orphanage, where they will be cared for in ‘family’ units with house parents. We aim to provide the best facilities for the children. The children will go to local schools and all will be encouraged to achieve their best. All the children who pass exams for secondary school will have their school fees paid for by the project. Our aim is to make sure that they are getting the skills and knowledge which will be the foundation of their lives. Also that some will become good leaders who follow Christ and will act as role-models for the younger children.

We also have a farm that is used to provide food for the children and a sustainable income to fund the project. This is a very important aspect of the project, as until now most of the work has relied on the financial support of friends. In Tanga the ground is very fertile and the climate excellent for growing all manner of crops.

We are seeking to raise £20,000 to build a nursery and dormitory for 30 children. This is for the first phase of the project.

Progress So Far

Construction of the new children’s home started in January 2010 with work on the boys and girls dormitories. The foundations were finished in February. During 2010 the walls and roof structure were put in place. A dedication ceremony was held in July 2010 that was attended by several of VHG Trustees and supporters. Unfortunately, due to the ill health of Julius Oscar who has been supervising the build, no further progress was made in this year. Work was restarted in May 2011.
